With our magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time.
From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic.
It’s also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you’re travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby.
Whitby
Whitby is a great family day out, with its ancient abbey, stunning coastline, and deliciously fresh fish and chips. We’d recommend a trip to the Magpie Cafe, described by Rick Stein as ‘the best fish and chip shop in Britain’.
Grosmont
Grosmont, our 1952 style British Rail station, is home to the engine sheds where our locomotives get some well-deserved restoration. It’s also the junction with the main rail network, and home to one of our traditional tea rooms.
Goathland
Our ‘celebrity’ station, Goathland is also known as Aidensfield in YTV’s Heartbeat and as the bewitching Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter Film. Visit the charming village, just a few minutes walk from the station, or enjoy a cup of tea in our 1922 style tea room.
Newton Dale Halt
Having carved your way deep through the rugged dales, make a special request for our Guard to stop at this tiny, picturesque halt. With access to the nearby National Park, it’s the perfect place to start your walk and spot some magnificent wildlife.
Levisham
Levisham is our 1912 style station, accessible by one solitary hill road and surrounded by the magnificent Yorkshire Moors. It’s also home to our Artist in Residence who’s studio is open whenever trains run and our cosy camping coach – the perfect base for a Moorland walking holiday.
Pickering
With its smart 1930s decoration and charming village atmosphere, Pickering is the perfect start to your steam train adventure. This station is also home to one of our traditional tea rooms, serving freshly baked scones, pies and pasties throughout the day.
Esk Valley
From time-to-time, usually at Gala Weekends, we run additional services to Battersby, along the Esk Valley line.
Give the North Yorkshire Moors Railway a visit for a great day out.
